What do you see? A dog in the woods. The dog leaves. The woods remain.

The previous post ended with:

The grass is growing through the paving slabs. 1. There are simply paving slabs and gravel there. 2. The grass is growing annoyingly through them. Chronologically, however, the situation is different. 1. Originally, there was a great deal of grass and dandelions; there were meadows, large grassy plains, and, further back in time, peat bogs. 2. Then, a single tile was laid there for the first time, and gradually more and more, until the entire landscape was covered with tiles, gravel and asphalt. Now, only a tiny fragment of it remains visible. A small fragment of the original landscape. A single tuft of grass and a dandelion as its last remaining representatives. That is what you see in the photo on the right.

The two birds have found a splendid vantage point. They flew in, settled down, and have now been sitting high and dry for a while, looking around, before continuing on their way shortly. They will leave, but the trees—of which you can only see the tops—will remain standing. And tomorrow too, as well as throughout the coming year. They will outlive both birds and offer generations of offspring the same excellent resting place. What do you see in the photo? The transience of the birds’ rest or the eternal presence of the greenery?

Yes, and where do you start? Do you look at the cow first? Or perhaps the fallen willow? You can still feel the force of the storm and hear the roots snapping and the wood splintering. Even now that the tree lies there, defeated, the action continues to echo and reverberate. And the cow? It stands there, watching, completely still. This photo illustrates the ‘plant blindness’ dilemma.

A little blackcap. A green bush. One comes and goes. The other stays.

The literal translation of ‘zhan zhuang’ is ‘standing pole’. What inspiration can you draw from following the example of a pole hammered into the ground? Some authors point out that in the distant past, in certain Buddhist monasteries, monks performed standing chi kung training on top of a sawn-off tree stump for a greater challenge in terms of balance and alertness. Zhan zhuang might, in that light, be better translated as ‘standing on a pole’.

I am unaware of any historical sources that directly link zhan zhuang to the life of trees. Sifu Lam Kam-Chuen popularised zhan zhuang as ‘standing like a tree’ through his lessons and books. Professor Jiao Guo-Rui, who taught in Germany for many years, labelled the wu chi posture as ‘Stehen wie ein Kiefer’, ‘standing like a pine’. What do you think of a perfectly straight Douglas fir as a role model? A worthy totem for the practitioner of the wu-chi posture!

Or did Jiao Guo-Rui have a more robust pine in mind when he used the phrase ‘Stehen wie ein Kiefer’, stand like a pine?

I would suggest choosing your own favourite tree as a model for your zhan zhuang practice. Incidentally, it is high time we cured ourselves of plant blindness. And swapped the hackneyed martial animal totems – bear, lion and eagle – for totems associated with spruce, pine and beech.

Twee vogels hebben een geweldige uitkijkpost gevonden. Ze kwamen aanvliegen, streken neer, zitten nu een tijdje hoog en droog om zich heen te kijken, en zullen zo meteen hun weg weer vervolgen. Zij zijn passant, de bomen, waar je alleen de kruin van kunt zien, zullen blijven staan. En morgen ook, alsmede het hele komende jaar. Ze zullen de beide vogels overleven en generaties gevleugelde nakomelingen eenzelfde voortreffelijk observatiepost bieden. Wat zie je nunop de foto? De actualiteit van de rustpauze van de vogels of de bestendige aanwezigheid van het groen?

Ja, en wat moet je hiermee beginnen? Kijk je eerst naar de koe? Of toch eerst naar de omgewaaide wilg? Je voelt nog het geweld van de storm en je hoort nog het afbreken van wortels en het versplinteren van hout. Zelfs nu de boom daar uitgeteld ligt, klinkt en trilt de actie door. En de koe? Die staat er doodstil naar te kijken. Deze foto illustreert het plantblindheid-dilemma.

Een kleine zwartkop. Een groene struik. De ene komt en gaat. De ander blijft.

De letterlijke vertaling van ‘zhan zhuang’ is ’standing pole’, ‘staan als een stok’. Wat voor inspiratie kun je ontlenen aan het volgen van het voorbeeld van een in de grond gehamerde stok? Sommige auteurs wijzen erop dat in een ver verleden in bepaalde boeddhistische kloosters monniken de staande chi kung-training uitvoerden bovenop een afgezaagde boomstronk, voor meer uitdaging met betrekking tot balans en alertheid. Zhan zhuang zou in dat licht beter vertaald kunnen worden als ‘staan òp een stok’.

Ik ken geen historische bronnen, die zhan zhuang direct met het leven van bomen in verband brengen. Sifu Lam Kam-Chuen populariseerde via zijn lessen en boeken zhan zhuang als ‘staan als een boom’. Professor Jiao Guo-Rui, die vele jaren in Duitsland onderwees, labelde de wu chi-houding als ’Stehen wie ein Kiefer’, ‘staan als een den’. Wat te denken van een kaarsrechte douglasspar als rolmodel? Ik zou zeggen, kies zelf je favoriete boom als voorbeeld voor je zhan zhuang-beoefening. Het is trouwens de hoogste tijd voor ons om onszelf van plantblindheid te genezen. En de uitgekauwde martiale dieren totems - beer, leeuw en adelaar - in te ruilen voor totems, die verbonden zijn aan spar, den en beuk.

Plants are bound to the location where they first sprouted. Unable to dodge, run or flee, they have no choice but to resolve any difficulties that arise right where they stand. Plants have developed an endless array of self-defence mechanisms. Often without any outward signs of anything unusual, they use great creativity to fend off aggressive rodents and grazers: bark, spines, thorns, scent, poison and intoxication. Our science has investigated and documented only a fraction of plant warfare and seduction techniques. Who said that plants just stand there defenceless and know nothing of martial arts?

You might wonder why plants are so rarely found in martial heraldry. Razor-sharp glass daggers that shatter upon impact, releasing an irritating acid. How is that peaceful and green?

Perhaps it would be a good idea to adopt the stinging nettle as a martial totem?

Treating plants with chemical pesticides

This intense bitterness is lethal to microorganisms and is therefore a vital medicine for us.

What can bring us close to the chemical world of plants is navigating and orienting ourselves through our sense of smell. Just like plants, we live in a world of scent, although for most of us this is a neglected – and washed-away – reality. Scents are immediate, instinctive, and relentless and awaken memories. A large part of the sea of scent in which we live is of plant origin. A dizzying palette. When a plant cannot bridge a distance because of its roots, there is always the wind. It carries the plant’s scents far away and brings the scents of others to it. The lack of a nose in no way prevents the plant from perceiving scent.

Alongside the development of martial skills, the practitioner explores the paths to health and the art of longevity. And who better to turn to for inspiration? By the time a healthy oak or beech tree reaches adolescence, the vast majority of animals are already elderly or have passed away. The lifespan of most animals pales in comparison to that of many plants.

It is a true miracle that a starfish can grow a new arm after losing one. Doesn’t that seem rather handy? Yet any ordinary tree loses branches throughout its life, and within a short time they are all replaced by new ones. Whereas an animal’s vital functions are concentrated in specific organs, a plant is built in a modular way. All parts are replaceable and renewable. Even if a storm or a fire has destroyed the above-ground part of the tree, the hidden root system is often still very much alive. And look, so soon after the devastating fire, new greenery is already appearing again.

In Utah, USA, grows Pando. Pando is not a single tree but a forest of over 40 hectares of quaking aspen. All 40,000 trunks share the same root system, and whilst individual trunks are born and die, Pando as a whole is ancient, dating back 14,000 years. Isn’t that a fascinating example of regenerative power?

Halfway through your daily walk in the woods, you suddenly hear a strange whistling sound. Then it goes quiet, but you hear it again. You look around to see where the sound is coming from. The dense foliage blocks your view. There it is again. Where the woods give way to a single row of trees along the path, the view is clearer. And now you see it: the hissing sound is coming from the burner beneath a large yellow hot-air balloon. What a sight, as tall as a house! You take a photo; you can show it at home later this evening as evidence to back up a good story.

But what can you actually see in that photo? A yellow hot-air balloon? Or perhaps lots of green plants, bushes and trees? Yes, the latter is certainly true. There is far more green than yellow to be seen in the photo. A single balloon versus a large number of plants of a wide variety of species. Moreover, the balloon is in the background of the photo, and many of the plants – certainly the two oaks – are in the foreground. Yet, when you tell the story in the evening, it will undoubtedly be all about that yellow contraption. The greenery merely makes an appearance; it forms the backdrop, the wallpaper.

An hour after you took the photo, the balloon took off. Perhaps you saw it drifting off into the distance later on and heard the sound of the burner a few more times, each time from further away.

The trees and plants, on the other hand, remained where they were. An hour after take-off, and even now – you can safely assume – they are still there. If something doesn’t move, it apparently goes unnoticed and gives little cause for a story. Of all the walks you took in the woods, you can recall that one specific occasion when you saw the balloon. The memory of the trees and the forest, however – which you encountered on every walk – has faded into a gentle background melody. Pleasant, certainly – the proximity of the greenery is, after all, the main reason for your walks – but within the fabric of your memory, it is white noise.

The ‘No Entry’ sign catches the eye. You show this photo to someone and ask, 'What do you see?’ Two rows of pedunculate oaks, blackberries and ground elder; overhanging branches, a home and food source for countless insects and birds; the contrast between the light in the open field and the shade beneath the trees? No, the answer undoubtedly relates solely to the traffic sign. Unlike the hot-air balloon in the previous photo, it doesn’t move; it is just as rooted to the spot as the greenery around it. So that doesn’t make the difference. Perhaps the person you asked will notice that the sign is screwed onto a post found on the spot. A twisted, broken-off branch from one of the oaks. But then again, there are so many of those lying about in the woods, and they don’t stand out at all. At least not until a red-bordered traffic sign is attached to it and stuck upright in the ground.

The phenomenon whereby the plant world does not seem to make much of an impression on our consciousness is known as ‘plant blindness’. For our distant ancestors, who lived in the wild, greenery was not a threat. At least not to the same extent as many of the animals they might encounter in the forest. Greenery does not bite, does not spring from ambush and does not chase. Greenery represented the neutrality of shelter, and it still does so for us. Greenery does not impose itself, as red tends to do. The red border around the ‘no entry’ sign and the red-chequered level crossing with red warning lights in the photo below stand out and occupy your mind.

Life requires the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. This phenomenon is found in both animals and plants, and the two mechanisms complement one another. What one gives, the other takes. What one exhales, the other inhales deeply. Haemoglobin and chlorophyll, central to the oxygen-carbon dioxide cycle in animals and plants, respectively, although very different in function, have a similar chemical structure. The former is built around an iron core, the latter around a magnesium one. Animals derive their characteristic red colour from the former, whilst the latter makes plants green.

Halverwege je dagelijkse wandeling in het bos hoor je plots een vreemd blazend geluid. Dan is het stil, maar dan hoor je het nog een keer. Je kijkt om je heen om te ontdekken waar het geluid vandaan komt. Het dichte groen verhindert het zicht. Daar klinkt het weer. Waar het bos wijkt voor een enkele bomenrij langs het pad, is er vrijer zicht. En nu zie je het: het geblaas komt van de brander onder een grote gele luchtballon. Wat een ding, als een huis zo hoog! Je maakt een foto; die kun je later vanavond thuis laten zien, als bewijsstuk bij een goed verhaal.

Maar wat zie je eigenlijk op die foto? Een gele luchtballon? Of misschien toch heel veel groene planten, struiken en bomen? Ja, dat laatste is zeker waar. Op de foto is veel meer groen dan geel te zien. Eén enkele ballon versus een groot aantal planten, van een ruime variëteit aan soorten. Bovendien bevindt de ballon zich op de achtergrond van de foto en veel van de planten - zeker de twee eiken - staan op de eerste rij. Toch, als je ‘s avonds het verhaal vertelt, gaat het ongetwijfeld alleen over dat gele gevaarte. Het groen figureert slechts; het vormt het decor, het behang.

Een uur nadat je de foto nam, is de ballon opgestegen. Misschien heb je hem later in de verte zien wegzweven, hetzelfde geluid van de brander nog een paar keer gehoord, iedere keer van verder weg.

De bomen en planten daarentegen bleven staan waar ze stonden. Een uur na het opstijgen, en ook nu, dat mag je rustig aannemen, staan ze er nog steeds. Als iets niet beweegt, dan valt het blijkbaar niet op, en geeft het weinig aanleiding voor verhaal. Van alle wandelingen die je in het bos maakte, kun je die ene specifieke keer, toen je de ballon zag, memoreren. De herinnering aan de bomen en het bos echter - iedere wandeling kwam je ze tegen - is verworden tot een zachte achtergrondmuziek. Aangenaam, zeker – de nabijheid van het groen is nu eenmaal de belangrijkste reden om je wandelingen te maken – maar binnen het construct van je herinnering is het white noise.

Het niet-inrijden-bordje vangt de aandacht. Je laat deze foto aan iemand zien en je vraagt erbij: wat zie je? Twee rijen zomereiken, bramen en zevenblad, neerhangende takken, een thuis en voedsel voor talloze insecten en vogels, afwisseling tussen het licht op het open veld en de schaduw onder de bomen? Nee, het antwoord heeft ongetwijfeld alleen betrekking op het verkeersbordje. Anders dan de luchtballon op de vorige foto, verplaatst hij zich niet; hij is net zo plaatsgebonden als het groen in zijn omgeving. Dus dat maakt het verschil niet. Misschien merkt de persoon aan wie je de vraag stelde, wel op dat het bordje is vastgeschroefd op een ter plekke gevonden paaltje. Een kronkelige, afgebroken tak van een van de eiken. Maar ja, daar liggen er zoveel van in het bos, en die vallen helemaal niet op. Tenminste zolang er geen roodomrand verkeersbord aan is vastgemaakt en rechtop in de grond is gestoken.

Het fenomeen dat de plantenwereld niet goed in ons bewustzijn lijkt door te dringen, wordt ‘plantblindheid’ genoemd. Voor onze verre voorouders, die in de wilde natuur woonden, was het groen niet bedreigend. In ieder geval niet in die mate als veel van de dieren die ze in het bos tegen het lijf konden lopen. Groen bijt niet, springt niet uit een hinderlaag en achtervolgt niet. Groen vormde de neutraliteit van de beschutting en dat doet het voor ons nog steeds. Groen dringt zich niet op, zoals al het rode dat pleegt te doen. De rode rand om het niet-inrijden-bord en de rood geblokte spoorwegovergang met rode waarschuwingslichten op de foto hieronder springen naar voren en houden je geest bezig.

Leven vraagt om uitwisseling van zuurstof en kooldioxide. Dat fenomeen vind je terug bij zowel dier als plant en beide mechanismen zijn aan elkaar complementair. Wat de ene geeft, neemt de ander. Wat de een uitademt, ademt de ander met volle teugen in. Hemoglobine en chlorofyl, centraal in de zuurstof-kooldioxidecarrousel van respectievelijk dieren en planten, hoewel heel verschillend in werking, hebben een vergelijkbare chemische structuur. De eerste is gebouwd rond een kern van ijzer, de ander rond een van magnesium. Aan de een ontlenen dieren hun rode karakteristiek, de ander maakt planten groen.

Planten zijn gebonden aan de locatie van hun oorspronkelijke ontkiemen. Niet in staat om te ontwijken, te rennen en te vluchten, zit er voor hen niets anders op dan moeilijkheden die zich voordoen ter plekke op te lossen. Planten ontwikkelden een oneindig scala aan zelfverdedigingsmechanismen. Vaak zonder dat er aan de buitenkant veel bijzonders te zien is, bieden ze met een grote creativiteit het hoofd aan agressieve knagers en grazers: bast, stekels, doornen, geur, gif en bedwelming. Onze wetenschap heeft nog maar een fractie onderzocht en in kaart gebracht van de plantaardige oorlogsvoering en verleidingstechnieken. Wie zei dat planten daar maar weerloos staan en van martiale kunst geen weet hebben?

Je vraagt je af waarom planten nauwelijks voorkomen in martiale heraldiek. Vlijmscherpe dolken van glas, die na insertie afbreken, waarna een irriterend zuur vrijkomt. Hoezo vreedzaam groen?

Wellicht een idee om de brandnetel als martiale totem te adopteren?

Het intense bitter is dodelijk voor micro-organismen en daarom voor ons een vitaal medicijn.

Wat ons dicht bij de chemische wereld van planten kan brengen, is het navigeren en oriënteren via de neus. Net als planten leven we in een wereld van geur, alhoewel dat voor de meesten van ons een ondergeschoven - en weggedouchte - realiteit is. Geuren zijn direct, instinctief, onverbiddelijk, en laten herinneringen ontwaken. Een groot gedeelte van de zee van geur waarin we leven, is van plantaardige origine. Een duizelingwekkend palet Wanneer een plant vanwege zijn worteling geen afstand kan overbruggen, is daar altijd de wind. Die voert de geuren van de plant mee naar verte en brengt de geuren van anderen naar hem toe. Het ontbreken van een neus belet de plant geenszins om geur waar te nemen.

Parallel aan de ontwikkeling van martiale vaardigheden onderzoekt de beoefenaar de wegen van de gezondheid en de kunst om lang te leven. En naar wie zou je je het beste ter inspiratie kunnen wenden? Verreweg de meeste dieren zijn al bejaard of overleden als een gezonde eik of beuk pas in zijn adolescentie is. De leeftijd van de meeste dieren valt in het niet bij de leeftijd van veel planten.

Het is een waar wonder dat een zeester een nieuwe arm kan laten groeien, nadat hij er een verloren is. Lijkt je dat niet handig? Maar een willekeurige boom verliest zijn leven lang takken en na korte tijd zijn die alle vervangen door weer nieuwe. Waar een dier levensfuncties heeft geconcentreerd in specifieke organen, is de plant modulair gebouwd. Alle gedeeltes zijn vervangbaar en vernieuwbaar. Zelfs als het onweer of een brand de bovengrondse boom heeft vernietigd, is het onzichtbare worteldeel vaak nog springlevend. En zie, nog maar zo kort na de verwoestende brand, verschijnt het nieuwe groen alweer.

In het Amerikaanse Utah groeit Pando. Pando is niet één enkele boom, maar een bos van meer dan 40 hectare ratelpopulier. Alle 40.000 stammen delen hetzelfde wortelsysteem, en terwijl de enkele stam geboren wordt en sterft, is Pando in zijn geheel oeroud, 14.000 jaar. Is dat niet een fascinerend voorbeeld van regeneratieve kracht?

It doesn’t take much for us to recognise ourselves in an animal. Just like us: two eyes and two ears, and a mouth that wants to bite and chew. Arms and legs, paws, wings, fins: a continuous evolutionary kinship. And then there’s that remarkable shared animal restlessness. We, as animals, are always on the move. When danger approaches, we run away. If we smell a tasty morsel or a fragrant fellow creature, we sneak closer. The solution to both obtaining what is lacking and avoiding what is irritating, uncomfortable and threatening lies in our movements through space. If you cannot find what you are looking for here, you go there. And if you encounter something there that does not suit you, you move on again to somewhere else. This relentless restlessness marks the kinship between us humans and other animals.

How different plants are. Rooted in the spot where they once sprouted as seeds, they cannot escape or gain an advantage by moving. They must find a solution to every challenge they face – and do so right where they stand. An unthinkable task for any animal, a member of the restless family. Biologist Stefano Mancuso, author of ‘The Revolutionary Genius of Plants’, notes:

Whereas animals react to changes in their surroundings by moving to avoid those changes, plants respond to the constantly changing environment by adapting to meet it.

And the renowned French botanical illustrator Francis Hallé says in an interview: ...

When I entered the Sorbonne in Paris, I was not really interested in plants, but rather animals, indeed like 99 percent of students, by the way. Today. I like animals, but I can’t take them seriously because they move all the time. …. For me, trees are much more beautiful than animals. Animals are dirty, noisy, and when they die, they smell awful. When a tree dies, it doesn’t smell bad because its molecules contain less sulfur. I wonder if our initial relationship to trees is aesthetic rather the scientific. When we come across a beautiful tree, it is an extraordinary thing. ….

TOTEM

People who see themselves reflected in animals are easily tempted into anthropomorphism. A small, cuddly dog – yet a direct descendant of the feared wolf – is dressed in a fashionable jacket. And in the upturned corners of a greying Donald Duck’s beak, the artist draws white teeth. In other words, this game of mirrors leads to zoomorphism, whereby humans, out of envy, are only too eager to appropriate the characteristics of the animal. The animal possesses primal physical strength, lightning speed and fearsome teeth and jaws, without which civilised humans are nothing more than wimps.

The animal as an icon. The Hague, my hometown, has the stork as its city totem. Our neighbours in Scheveningen feature two herrings on their coat of arms. The Dutch national football team takes the lion as its symbol. Runners adopt an antelope as their totem, swimmers a sea lion, thieves a magpie, and weightlifters an Asian working elephant.

In martial arts, it is common to draw inspiration from the animal kingdom. Martial animal totems therefore take many forms. The grenadier’s bearskin cap, a dragon on a knight’s shield, Bruce Lee’s praying mantis and General Yu Fei’s Eagle Claw.

Tiger, crane, leopard, snake and dragon in the southern styles. The twelve Hsing I Chuan animals. The ‘bear step’ and the ‘snake step’ in I Chuan. But aren’t we missing something? For the martial artist, animals certainly possess enviable qualities. Qualities that you can imagine, imitate and perhaps one day call your own. But aren’t there plants that can serve as our teachers and sources of inspiration? Where are the plant and tree totems?

Zonder veel moeite kunnen we ons in een dier herkennen. Net als wij: twee ogen en twee oren, en een mond die wil bijten en kauwen. Armen en benen, poten, vleugels, vinnen: een doorlopende evolutionaire familieverwantschap. En dan nog, die opmerkelijke gemeenschappelijke animale rusteloosheid. Wij, dieren, zoeken het steeds in beweging. Wanneer het gevaar nadert, rennen we weg. Ruiken we een lekker hapje of een geurige soortgenoot, sluipen we naderbij. De oplossing voor zowel het verkrijgen van wat gemist wordt, als het vermijden van wat irritant, ongemakkelijk en bedreigend is, zit in onze verplaatsingen door de ruimte. Vind je wat je zoekt niet hier, dan ga je naar daar. En kom je daar iets tegen wat je niet zint, verkas je weer naar elders. De niet-aflatende ongedurigheid tekent de verwantschap tussen ons mensen en de andere dieren.

Hoe anders zijn planten. Verankerd op de plek waar ze eens als zaadje ontsproten, kunnen ze niet vermijden of verkrijgen door zich te verplaatsen. Ze zullen voor iedere uitdaging waar ze mee te maken krijgen een oplossing dienen te vinden - en wel ter plekke. Een ondenkbare opgave voor om het even welk dier, lid van de familie der rustelozen. Bioloog Stefano Mancuso, schrijver van ‘The Revolutionary Genius of Plants', noteert:

Whereas animals react to changes in their surroundings by moving to avoid those changes, plants respond to the constantly changing environment by adapting to meet it.

En de befaamde Franse botanische tekenaar Francis Hallé vertelt in een interview: ....

When I entered the Sorbonne in Paris, I was not really interested in plants, but rather animals, indeed like 99 percent of students, by the way. Today. I like animals, but I can’t take them seriously because they move all the time. …. For me, trees are much more beautiful than animals. Animals are dirty, noisy, and when they die, they smell awful. When a tree dies, it doesn’t smell bad because its molecules contain less sulfur. I wonder if our initial relationship to trees is aesthetic rather the scientific. When we come across a beautiful tree, it is an extraordinary thing. ….

TOTEM

De mens die zich spiegelt in dieren, wordt al gauw verleid tot antropomorfisme. Een klein knuffelhondje, toch directe afstammeling van de gevreesde wolf, krijgt een modieus jasje aangetrokken. En in de opgetrokken snavelhoek van een grijzende Donald Duck tekent de tekenaar witte tanden. Ofwel leidt het spiegelspel tot zoomorfisme, waarbij de mens zich uit jaloezie maar al te graag eigenschappen van het dier zou willen toe-eigenen. Dat beschikt over fysieke oerkrachten, flitsende snelheid en vreeswekkende tanden en kaken, zonder welke de beschaafde mens niet meer dan een sukkelaar is.

Het dier als icoon, als totem. Den Haag, mijn geboortestad, heeft de ooievaar als stadstotem. De Scheveningse buren voeren twee haringen in hun wapenschild. De voetballers van Oranje spiegelen zich aan de leeuw. Hardlopers nemen een antilope als totem, zwemmers een zeeleeuw, dieven een ekster, en gewichtheffers een Aziatische werkolifant.

In de krijgskunsten is het gebruikelijk om de kunst af te kijken in het dierenrijk. Martiale dierentotems komen dan ook in vele gedaanten. De berenmuts van de grenadier, een draak op een ridderschild, Bruce Lee’s bidsprinkhaan en generaal Yu Fei’s Eagle Claw.

Tijger, kraanvogel, luipaard, slang en draak in de zuidelijke stijlen. De twaalf Hsing I Chuan-dieren. De ‘bear step’ en de ‘snake step’ in I Chuan. Maar missen we niet iets? Voor de martiale artiest beschikken dieren zeker over benijdenswaardige eigenschappen. Eigenschappen die je je kunt inbeelden, imiteren en misschien op een dag je eigen kunt noemen Maar zijn er geen planten die ons als leraar en inspirator kunnen dienen? Waar zijn de plant- en boomtotems?

Within Chinese traditional internal martial arts, there is a remarkable training method: remaining in certain body positions for long periods of time. Not infrequently, such practices are viewed with a certain disdain. They are said to be static, detached from martial dynamics and actually naive. How could martial skill ever be trained by standing still? Yet the correct practice of zhan zhuang, the collection of standing poses, shows that reaction speed, sensitivity, movement coordination and resistance to stress can be honed through it.

One martial tradition in particular, I Chuan, is fully committed to the use of silent postures. The entire basis of I Chuan is laid by zhan zhuang practice. Zhan zhuang is translated in the literal sense as ‘standing like a stick’, but more vividly as ‘standing like a tree’. An essential posture is wu chi zhuang.

‘Wu chi’ refers to unformed action. Before a defined action is selected to be performed, there are innumerable other actions possible. Before ‘stepping forward’ is selected and ultimately manifested, together with ‘stepping backward’, ‘stepping sideways’, ‘jumping up’ or ‘turning’ and many more movement options, it lies dormant, and all have equal potential value. There exists a vacuum, a stage of stillness, where all these options have wakened up, but none of these have yet manifested.

The practice of the wu chi posture doesn’t include any particular movement; at the same time, it includes the potential of all movements. Instead of focussing on merely ‘stepping forward’, one intends ‘stepping forward’ and ‘stepping backward’ at the same time. Plus ‘stepping left’ and ‘stepping right’, ‘sitting down’ and ‘standing up’, ‘turning left’ and tuning right. The wu chi practice lay in the area of pre-movement.

While standing still in the wu chi posture the intention (i) is preparing the body for action. All the qualities of movement are awakened: direction, duration, length, strength, intensity, etc. Without that this leads to actual movement. The practitioner wants to move, has cultivated the strong intention to do so, but doesn’t show any of it.

Instead of a dull stand-off, a boring standstill, the wu chi posture includes a high internal dynamic. It shimmers with possibilities.

The wu chi posture resembles the stance of a marvelled child. Or the stance of an adult, intensely listening. Centred, grounded, balanced, the senses primed, optimally relaxed. The decision to move has not yet been made and is repeatedly postponed. Yet the body is ready to spring into action at any time.

On the athletics track, sounds ON YOUR MARKS: the body relaxes and connects with the ground. Then GET SET: the mind sharpens and alertness grows. With GO the athlete explodes into action, and the accumulated energy is being consumed.

However, the wu chi training takes a different track. ON YOUR MARKS and GET SET remain the same, but on GO, the practitioner doesn’t sprint forward at all.

At the normally inevitable GO the practitioner returns to the deep relaxation phase of ON YOUR MARKS. And use that as a bed for increased mental sharpness at another GET SET. The GO phase is omitted – what follows is an ongoing alternation between ON OUR MARKS and GET SET, in ever-increasing intensity and refinement. The GO moment is closely approached, and a lot of potential energy, chi, is built up. None of it is lost in the movement. The area of research of the wu chi zhuang is the seemingly empty space before the movement, the movement that, as long as the wu chi posture is practised, will never manifest.

Physically, the wu chi posture is left-right symmetrical. The intention to move is also equally divided between the left and right sides. At a GO command, the practitioner could move equally fast and equally powerful to either the left or the right. However, the GO command will not sound, and movement will not appear, but the circulation of chi will, in abundant measure.

Equally, the physical posture and distribution of intention is also perfectly divided between the front and the back of the body. When a GO command would sound, the practitioner could move forward or backward quickly and adequately. But there won’t be any GO command or physical movement to either the back or the front, but chi circulation to these regions is greatly enhanced.

And the same goes for the space above and the space below.

Imagine: you are standing still in the middle of traffic on a very busy square. All around are pedestrians, cyclists, cars, a bus and a tram. When the body is tense and/or the mind distracted, you will never be able to give the right response to potential collision. A cyclist comes from the right, a car from behind, and the tram from the front. Your attention and intention to step away quickly must divide between six primary directions. The wu chi posture will give a clue.

If you don’t like the image of a busy traffic square, get up early in spring or early summer and go into the forest. Stand with your eyes closed, upright, feet firmly on the ground, relaxed, ears pricked. The wonder of bird sounds will naturally connect you to the space around you. Bird sounds in front, behind, to the left and right, above, and perhaps near you on the ground. Your breath is elongated and still. There won’t be any physical move in any of these directions. From your body centre in your lower abdomen, the xia dan tian, sensual awareness, intention and chi will spread in six directions.

Remember the hide-and-seek of your childhood. After counting back, you stood there alone, wondering where your friends were. You looked forward but equally well backwards. You looked left and right, up and down, and tried to do all that at the same time. And with that you kept an eye on the whole environment; you were able to take action in every possible direction if necessary.

In the I Chuan tradition, we train in the wu chi stance for five or ten minutes. Five or ten minutes to refine sensory perception and train alertness, increase reaction speed, become more grounded, and build chi. But there are also days when we stand in that same wu chi posture for 45 minutes. 45 minutes devoted to high-energy training.

Another name for the wu chi stance is ti cha zhuang. Ti translated as ‘carrying’ or ‘lifting’, cha as ‘stabbing’. In silence, when practicing the ti cha zhuang you make these two opposing movements simultaneously: an upward directed lifting, and a downward directed stabbing. Both movements are limited to a bare minimum; in fact, they balance each other in such a way that the result seems a silent pose. The intention is clear: no physical movement but a strong stimulus for chi circulation.

Binnen de Chinese traditionele interne krijgskunsten bestaat een opmerkelijke trainingsmethodiek: het voor langere tijd blijven staan in bepaalde lichaamshoudingen. Niet zelden wordt er tegen dit soort praktijken met een zeker dedain aangekeken. Ze zouden statisch zijn, losstaand van de martiale dynamiek en eigenlijk naïef. Hoe zou martiale vaardigheid ooit getraind kunnen worden door stil te staan? Toch laat de correcte beoefening van zhan zhuang - de collectie aan staande houdingen - zien, dat reactiesnelheid, sensitiviteit, bewegingscoördinatie en stressbestendigheid erdoor aangescherpt kunnen worden.

Met name één martiale traditie, I Chuan, zet volledig in op het gebruik van stille houdingen. De gehele basis van I Chuan wordt gelegd door zhan zhuang-beoefening. Zhan zhuang wordt in de letterlijke zin vertaald als ’staan als een stok’, maar aanschouwelijker als ‘staan als een boom’. Een essentiële houding is wu chi zhuang.

Wu chi verwijst naar een nog ongevormde actie. Voordat een bepaalde actie is geselecteerd en zich manifesteert, is hij deel van een grote verzameling mogelijkheden. Voordat ‘stap naar voren’ is geselecteerd en zich manifesteert, ligt ze samen met ‘stap naar achteren’, ‘stap zijwaarts’, ‘spring omhoog’ of ‘draai’ en vele andere bewegingsopties als latente mogelijkheid te wachten, alle met eenzelfde potentiële waarde. Er is een vacuüm, een stadium van pre-beweging, waar al deze opties ter beschikking staan, maar zich nog niet laten zien.

De wu chi-houding gaat niet gepaard met een specifieke beweging: het is de optelsom van een hele reeks bewegingen. In plaats van zich te beperken tot enkel ‘stap voorwaarts’, richt de beoefenaar zich op het tegelijkertijd maken van ‘stap voorwaarts’ èn ‘stap achterwaarts’. Plus ‘stap links’, ‘stap rechts’, ‘ga zitten', ‘sta op’, ‘draai naar links’, ‘draai naar rechts’ en meer.

Hoewel de bewegingen binnen de wu chi-houding zich niet laten zien, zijn ze volledig actief, zoals een stationair lopende automotor. De beoefening van wu chi bevindt zich op het terrein van de pre-beweging.

Tijdens de beoefening van wu chi bereidt de intentie (i) het lichaam voor op actie. Alle kwaliteiten van beweging worden in stilte geactiveerd en getest: de richting, de duur, de lengte, de kracht, de intensiteit, etc., zonder dat dit alles leidt tot een daadwerkelijke beweging. De beoefenaar wil bewegen, heeft een duidelijke intentie gecultiveerd om dat te doen, maar laat er toch niets van zien.

In plaats van een doffe patstelling, een saaie stilstand, leeft er binnen in de wu chi-houding een hoge interne dynamiek. Het zindert van de mogelijkheden.

De wu chi-houding lijkt op de houding van een verwonderd kind. Of van een volwassene die intens staat te luisteren. Gecentreerd, geaard, in balans, de zintuigen gespitst, optimaal ontspannen. Het besluit om te gaan bewegen is nog niet gemaakt, en wordt steeds opnieuw uitgesteld. Toch is het lichaam klaar om op ieder gewenst moment in actie te komen.

Op de atletiekbaan klinkt ‘OP UW PLAATSEN’: het lichaam ontspant en verbindt zich met de grond. Dan ‘KLAAR’: de geest scherpt zich en alertheid groeit. Op ‘AF’ explodeert de atleet naar voren en de geaccumuleerde energie wordt opgesoupeerd.

Maar hier neemt de wu-chi-training een andere afslag. OP UW PLAATSEN en KLAAR blijven zoals ze waren, maar er volgt geen AF, geen signaal om weg te sprinten.

In plaats van het anders zo onvermijdelijke AF keert de beoefenaar terug naar de diepe fysieke ontspanning van OP UW PLAATSEN. En gebruikt dat als een inbedding voor een nog meer verhoogde mentale scherpte bij een volgende KLAAR. De AF-fase komt te vervallen! In plaats daarvan volgt er een doorgaande afwisseling tussen OP UW PLAATSEN en KLAAR, in steeds hogere intensiteit en verfijning.

Het AF-moment wordt dicht benaderd en veel potentiële energie, chi, wordt opgebouwd. Niets daarvan gaat verloren in beweging. Het onderzoeksgebied van de wu chi zhuang is de schijnbaar lege ruimte vóór de beweging, de beweging die, zolang de wu chi-houding wordt beoefend, nooit gaat komen.

Fysiek gesproken is de wu chi-houding links-rechts symmetrisch. Ook de intentie om te bewegen is gelijk verdeeld tussen de linker- en de rechterzijde. Als gevolg van de AF-opdracht kan de beoefenaar even snel en even krachtig naar links dan wel naar rechts bewegen. Maar, zoals gezegd, het AF weerklinkt niet en er volgt dus geen enkele beweging. In plaats daarvan wordt de circulatie van chi in ruime mate gestimuleerd.

En dat is nog niet alles. De fysieke houding en de verdeling van intentie is ook perfect verdeeld tussen de voorzijde en de achterzijde van het lichaam. Als het AF zou klinken, kan de beoefenaar snel en adequaat naar voren dan wel naar achteren bewegen. Maar er weerklinkt geen AF. Dus geen fysieke beweging, naar voren noch naar achteren. In plaats daarvan een flinke stimulans voor de interne chi-circulatie.

Een idem voor de ruimte bovenin en de ruimte beneden in het lichaam.

Stel je voor: je staat stil midden tussen het verkeer op een druk verkeersplein. Overal om je heen voetgangers, fietsers, fatbikes, auto’s, een bus en een tram. Wanneer het lichaam gespannen is en/of de geest afgeleid, zul je nooit de juiste respons kunnen geven op potentiële botsing. Een fietser komt van rechts, een auto van achter, de tram van voren. Je aandacht en de intentie om snel te kunnen wegstappen moeten zich verdelen tussen zes primaire richtingen. Het idee achter de wu-chi-houding brengt uitkomst.

Wanneer het beeld van een druk verkeersplein je niet bevalt: sta in het voorjaar of de vroege zomer vroeg op en ga het bos in. Sta met je ogen gesloten, rechtop, de voeten stevig op de grond, ontspannen, de oren gespitst. Het wonder van de vogelgeluiden, die je als een koepel omgeeft, zal je op natuurlijke wijze met de ruimte om je heen verbinden. Vogelgeluiden voor, achter, links en rechts, boven, en misschien ook wel beneden je op de grond. Je adem is langgerekt en stil. Je intentie verspreidt zich in zes richtingen, maar ook nu heeft dat geen enkele fysieke beweging tot gevolg. Vanuit je lichaamscentrum in je onderbuik, het xia dan tian, wordt de chi in zes richtingen gestimuleerd.

Herinner je het verstoppertje spelen van je kindertijd? Na het terugtellen stond je daar alleen, je afvragend waar je vriendjes zich verstopt hadden. Je keek naar voren, maar tegelijk naar achteren. Je keek naar links en rechts, boven en beneden, allemaal tegelijk. En doordat je de hele omgeving in de gaten houdt, ben je in staat - wanneer dat nodig is - in iedere mogelijke richting in actie te komen.

In de I Chuan-traditie trainen we de wu-chi-houding voor vijf of tien minuten. Vijf of tien minuten om zintuiglijke waarneming te verfijnen en alertheid te trainen, reactiesnelheid te vergroten, meer te aarden, en chi op te bouwen. Maar er zijn ook dagen dat we zonder onderbreking 45 minuten in diezelfde wu chi-houding staan. 45 minuten besteed aan training met een uiterst hoge intensiteit.

Een andere naam voor de wu chi-houding, dezelfde houding, is ti cha zhuang. Ti vertaald als ‘dragen’ of ‘optillen’, cha als ‘steken’. In stilte maak je tijdens de beoefening van de ti cha zhuang twee bewegingen tegelijk: een naar boven gericht tillen en een naar beneden gericht steken. Beide bewegingen zijn beperkt tot het minimum; in feite heffen ze elkaar op tot in een stille houding. De intentie is helder en duidelijk: geen fysieke beweging, maar een krachtige stimulus voor de circulatie van chi.

HIDDEN TIME. How long can you still lounge before boarding starts? You look around. The large round ceiling clock is encased in a white bag. Nothing to see on it. And further down the departure hall, the other clocks are also enveloped. Strange, precisely at this place, one of Europe's major airports, where the high mass of precise timekeeping is performed. The advent of the train in the late 19th century forced the synchronisation of clocks across the country. Factories and offices brought time further into alignment. Previously, it was lived through reflexive seasons and the rhythm of day and night. It got light, it got dark and in between, somewhere in the middle, the sun was at its highest point. The welcome and security chat, the drinks and food, the newspaper or a brief uncomfortable nap. The resolution of the experience of travelling between Amsterdam and Milan is negligibly small. You step out of reality at Schiphol Airport, only to re-enter in Malpensa. As a rule, travelling by plane is smooth, you gain time. Or is the time between take-off and landing just totally wasted, a cut from your life?

'Welcome, please stay seated and still keep your belt fastened', the taxi music, then as fast as it goes through the jet bridge, down the long corridors, briefly going to the toilet, washing hands, perfume cloud from the duty free, luggage belt, customs - you can dream it all, you can go through it with your eyes closed. The time under a copy machine, the boredom. Then the train to Milano Centrale, and if you're lucky, and you are, immediate connection to Genova and La Spezia.

DREAMED TIME. You doze, it was also early rising this morning. The lowlands of Lombardy, the bridge over the Po, your attention flickers. The inexorable sequence of events blends with the cadence and directionality of the train. Wagon follows wagon, like one moment does the previous The arrow-shaped time that - like a needle -threads events together like beads. Without a needle and thread, everything would happen simultaneously. Present, past, future, there and here - everything would happen at once, like emptying a bucket by turning it upside down.

Perhaps you are now dreaming like Zhuang Zhi once did. About a butterfly, fluttering around without any hurry, carefree, knowing that her life will last only a few weeks. Or is it that butterfly, that is dreaming. Dreaming that she is you, nodding off on an Italian train? You open your eyes. Those must be the hills of Liguria.

SCATTERED TIME. After Genova, you are clearer in your head again. The train follows the coast, misty soft light, pastel-coloured villas, vineyards on the slopes. And then, unannounced, a staccato alternation of light and dark. A tunnel followed by views of a wonderful Italian fishing village, followed by another tunnel, and yet another village, even more beautiful than the first. I don't know if you know, this is iconic Italy, the Cinque Terra, at the top of every self-respecting bullet list. You must have been here to experience the tranquillity and authentic life. During the half-minute - the interval between two tunnels - you have a good view of yet another village and the crowds of tourists in the narrow streets and around the small harbour. On the paths connecting the Cinque Terra villages, there are regular traffic jams. Of travellers, of vacationers, of seekers of emptiness. There are time slots for walking from one village to another, and everything you would have liked to do spontaneously has to be booked long in advance. Surely, the etymology of 'holiday' must really be sought in the notion of emptiness. Emptiness of worries and emptiness of time pressure. Anyway, these dilemmas have nothing to do with you now.

BORROWED TIME. In La Spezia, you have an hour. It is now late afternoon and the train to Aulla will leave a bit later. Outside the station you find a small park. And what suits you nicely, there is a free bench. The dull rhythm of airport, plane, station and train is still under your skin, and how good it is to simply sit and look around. You don't know anyone here, no one knows you, you have no obligation, and the train to travel on is not here yet. Was it long ago that you had nothing to worry about and didn't get nervous about that? Was it long since you could observe freely? There to your left, an old man approaches, shuffling along. A friendly old gentleman, grey, slightly stooped. For a moment freed from the compulsive restlessness of doing, you can see beyond the limitation of the single moment. You see today's old man and you see the young fellow he was yesterday. Why creating separations and denying the one the naughty pranks and dreams and the other the wisdom? You see young in old and old in young.

ELAPSED TIME. In Aulla, a small nondescript town in the Magra valley, you are picked up. A vital, tanned man is waiting for you outside the station, leaning against a jeep, that has clearly been through a lot. He introduces himself to you: no, he is not Italian, but actually he is. Originally from Switzerland, he has lived here most of his life. You hit the road and that road leaves the sleepy town, into the hills. Your driver seems to be able to dream the route and does not skimp on speed. There is nothing to do but trust his steering.

If you look from the side at his hands, which loosely encompass the steering wheel, it is clear that they have been doing labor. And if your eyes discretely wander down, you see that he is driving a car with no shoes on. When he notices your searching eyes, he smiles. 'The other day I was stopped, routine check, by the carabinieri. I don't think they had experienced that before, a barefoot driver. 'That's not allowed, signore, please, shoes on behind the wheel.’ I complied, but you just drive much better without them, you have much more feeling with the car.'

Meanwhile, you drive through wooded hills, here and there a village, a group of talking people, a river, a bridge, trees, trees everywhere. 'Those are the peaks of the Apuani’, he says, ‘you can't see it from here, but on the other side, just below the summit, are the marble quarries. Michelangelo got the white marble there, for his David, and other of his works. In a straight line it's not far, Carrara, Massa, that's where the money is made. That marble is shipped everywhere. This here is another world, the mountains are in between. This land is called the Lunigiana, the land of the moon. It was always a forgotten part of the wealthy Toscana, and in fact it still is. Look there’, and he points ahead, towards a wooded slope, ‘there were terraces there not long ago, barley and vegetables, fruit trees. The Lunigiana emptied in the last century and the fields and villages depopulated.'

We drive on for some time without talking. The road gets narrower and even more winding. The evening sun is no longer able to peep over the hills. The green becomes dark green. 'Look', he says, making a broad gesture from left to right. 'Chestnuts, all chestnuts. The whole region is covered with chestnut forest, planted long ago. That used to be an important part of life for the people here. In autumn, chestnuts were collected, and dried. Chestnut flour, chestnut bread, chestnut biscuits. Yes, it is still done, but not on the scale of back then. What did they have? Wild boar, chestnuts and porcini. Many of the chestnut plots were abandoned, and rewilded. You'll see tomorrow.'

Dusk has set in. The winding road and your empty stomach don’t combine well together. Then your driver says: ‘there it is, that's Casola.’ You see a medieval village, glued against a hillside. And there lies Il Convento.

The jeep turns right into a dusty path, which after a short time is crossed by a small river. The driver does not hesitate and steers the jeep through the splashing water. A sharp turn and then steep uphill and we stop in front of the old monastery. He switches off the engine, we open the doors, get out, the engine hums and ticks. It is silent.

TWISTED TIME. Throughout history, in all cultures, trees held a special place and it is no different today. Yes, yes, surely you mean in the form of lumber and Christmas tree plantations? Ireland and Portugal were covered in oak forest, all of Europe was once one big forest, and look at it now. And just signing petitions to save the forests in the Amazon and Borneo, while here the continent was stripped of its trees long ago. Of course, there are forests allowed on this continent, as long as the trees stand nicely in rows next to each other and quickly provide straight lumber.

Our society worships youth. Fresh cheeks, tight body, youthful attractiveness. Everything possible is done to avoid wrinkles and, above all, to preserve the body as untouched as possible. Imagine what it would be like: on all billboards, in TV advertising, old wrinkled faces and aged bodies displayed to advertise products. It could be reality, in a distant future, old age and weathered bodies as an ideal to be pursued.

That is exactaly how we observe trees. An ancient lime tree, a rare old specimen, a fence around it, a placard with his history and what he has witnessed. That tree as a curiosity. In regards to trees it is all about old age, weathering, twistedness. Tell me, you wouldn't go to all the trouble, make a long diversions to go and look at a youthful spindle, straight and lean, with soft flawless skin, and translucent leaves.

How can you become as old as that linden? Definitely not by standing out much, or by trying to be useful.

Carpenter Shi went to Qi and, when he got to Crooked Shaft, he saw a serrate oak standing by the village shrine. It was broad enough to shelter several thousand oxen and measured a hundred spans around, towering above the hills. The lowest branches were eighty feet from the ground, and a dozen or so of them could have been made into boats.

There were so many sightseers that the place looked like a fair, but the carpenter didn’t even glance around and went on his way without stopping. His apprentice stood staring for a long time and then ran after Carpenter Shi and said, ‘Since I first took up my ax and followed you, Master, I have never seen timber as beautiful as this. But you don’t even bother to look, and go right on without stopping. Why is that?’

’Forget it—say no more!’ said the carpenter. ‘It’s a worthless tree! Make boats out of it and they’d sink; make coffins and they’d rot in no time; make vessels and they’d break at once. Use it for doors and it would sweat sap like pine; use it for posts and the worms would eat them up. It’s not a timber tree—there’s nothing it can be used for. That’s how it got to be that old!’

After Carpenter Shi had returned home, the oak tree appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘What are you comparing me with? Are you comparing me with those useful trees? The cherry apple, the pear, the orange, the citron, the rest of those fructiferous trees and shrubs—as soon as their fruit is ripe, they are torn apart and subjected to abuse. Their big limbs are broken off, their little limbs are yanked around. Their utility makes life miserable for them, and so they don’t get to finish out the years Heaven gave them, but are cut off in mid-journey. They bring it on themselves—the pulling and tearing of the common mob. And it’s the same way with all other things.’

‘As for me, I’ve been trying a long time to be of no use, and though I almost died, I’ve finally got it. This is of great use to me. If I had been of some use, would I ever have grown this large? Moreover you and I are both of us things. What’s the point of this—things condemning things? You, a worthless man about to die—how do you know I’m a worthless tree?’

When Carpenter Shi woke up, he reported his dream. His apprentice said, ‘If it’s so intent on being of no use, what’s it doing there at the village shrine?’

‘Shhh! Say no more! It’s only resting there. If we carp and criticize, it will merely conclude that we don’t understand it. Even if it weren’t at the shrine, do you suppose it would be cut down? It protects itself in a different way from ordinary people. If you try to judge it by conventional standards, you’ll be way off!’

TIME LINE. You wake up early. Everything in this monastery breathes history. The robust stone walls, the ruins of what was once a chapel, the pavement of the forecourt. You don't know it, so I whisper it in your ear: this was once a refuge for pilgrims on the road to Rome. Sure enough, all roads lead there, and the closer you get to the eternal city, the more all those roads have come together, like the tiny veins converge in the large central vein of a leaf.

UNSPECIFIED TIME. This morning at breakfast, you met the wife of yesterday's jeep driver. The latter, incidentally, turned out to be the owner of the old monastery. Found as a ruin and rebuilt into what it is today. Ah, that's where the penny drops - those working hands, you had noticed them during the drive. And so this woman is the owner as well. Her gaze is intense, her appearance earthy. 'I wasn't born here either,' she told me, but by now I belong here. I ended up in Italy at the time, by chance, in Pontremoli, as a member of a theatre group. Do you know Pontremoli? It's not far from here, also in the Lunigiana. Inside the castle, steles are on display. Strange, intriguing statues from prehistoric times, all excavated around here. That's how long the Lunigiana has been inhabited.

Deciding to stay here, we drove through the Lunigiana, without a defined plan, looking for a place to settle down. As if by chance, we found the Convento. Half in ruins and completely overgrown. We took a walk around the area, came into the old chestnut forest and that made it all clear. This was without a doubt the right place to stay.'

‘To get into the old chestnut forest, you also have to know where to enter. In the past, when this whole area was more populated, there were countless paths running through the woods, over the hills, from village to village. Paths used by porcini pickers in autumn, and chestnut gatherers. Now, if you walk into the forest, randomly, just from somewhere along the road, you won’t come far. Brambles, prickly plants, tough bushes, there is no way through. Go there and have a look. I can't go with you myself today, but my children are here and can show you the way.'

Just as Harry Potter had go to King's Cross, platform nine three-quarters, where he had to pass a wall in a rather unusual way, all in order to travel to Hogwarts, the entrance to the ancient forest is located at an unexpected place.

FORGOTTEN TIME. In the stone wall that surrounds the monastery you find the door, colourless and inconspicuous. The two young people are already there waiting for you. The door opens with some creaking and squeaking and you are standing on a narrow forest path. That path follows the outside of the monastery and then dives into the dense foliage of the forest. When you turn around after walking for a while, you see the hushed village in the distance. The sounds of the world - a power saw, the knock of a hammer, a crying child - fade away and are absorbed by the silence.

At a fork in the path - you would have walked right past it - the young man says: ‘straight ahead it continues to the convent of Codiponte, we turn right here.’ Near the fork is a huge chestnut, with a hollow base, from which a large number of stems have grown. You remain standing, is it your imagination? Looking through your lashes, it seems a forest spirit, with a tangled bunch of hair, a wild beard and open mouth, a silent scream. An ent from the Lord of the Rings, Treebeard. Is this the guard at the entrance to the ancient forest? No, your fantasy is to vivid. Still, you don't dare take a picture of this bizarre apparition. The two young people have moved on and you now walk a little faster to catch up. They certainly haven’t notice anything about your imagined encounter with the old tree.

For a few more minutes, you walk on. The conversation is hushed. I know, the atmosphere of the place where you stop is hard to describe, so I won't try. The three of you sit with your backs against the trunk of one of the forest masters. The sun can barely penetrate the thick foliage, the light is dappled and green. This time is the time of the trees. How long you sat there?

On the way back, as you pass the guard, you give a hidden nod of your head, as a sign of respect, After all, you never know. But the young woman saw your furtive gesture, your gazes cross. She smiles and winks. Would she know the guard too?

As you approach Il Convento again, you pick up the conversation again, at the same point where it had died down on the way out.

THE TIME GONE BY. Now that I have retold your journey, or inspired you to make it soon, we can talk further. I know the road that starts at Aulla well. I remember the hundred curves up to the small medieval village. And the first night's stay at Il Convento. That was 1999. The following morning we took a walk and - was it a coincidence, was it the magic of the wooden door - we found the ancient forest. We sat leaning against an aged chestnut tree, silently, was it an hour, was it longer? It was clear, this was the right place to organise an annual chi kung summer school. The first one in 2000 and about 15 more would follow in the years after.

TREE TIME. Participants came from all directions: Iceland, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, England, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Poland, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland, America, Italy and, of course, the Netherlands. At least once during each summer school, in the afternoon, once the heat of the Italian summer had calmed down a bit, we gathered at the wooden door in the outer wall of the monastery. Squeak open, everyone through, squeak shut again. Gaily chatting, we then followed the same narrow path on which you, with Shirin and Aaron, the two young people, walked. At the level of the fork and the guard, the carefree chatter had invariably lost its volume, and when we finally reached the oldest part of the chestnut grove, it had fallen completely silent. Not because it was so agreed - we were probably absorbed into the time scale peculiar to trees. Talking then becomes more laborious, actually redundant. Tree time, exactly, that the right term.

For some, chi kung practice in the ancient chestnut forest consisted of sitting simply, with their backs against a tree. Others lay down for a moment on the soft ground and fell into a deep sleep. And there were, of course, some who practiced chi kung in a more recognizable form. But all experienced a naturalness, an effortlessness. Like when it rains and you don't have to make an effort to get wet. Being present is enough.

TIMELESS. Shirin and Aaron's parents, Martina Weber and Marcel Müller, who have rebuilt the Convento over the years at an unruffled pace, provided warm hospitality year after year. They offered the perfect conditions for intense chi kung study. The first time I visited them, their children were small. Now they are adults and the initiators of a recurring summer festival in and around Il Convento.

Dit verhaal gaat over een deur in een oude stenen muur. Een muur rond een convent, een klooster. Vlakbij een stil bergdorpje. Achter de marmer bergen van de Appuani. Het verscheen in de zomer van 2025 in tree-time.nl.

VERBORGEN TIJD. Hoe lang kun je nog rondlummelen voordat het boarden begint? Je kijkt rond. De grote ronde plafondklok is ingepakt in een witte zak. Niets op te zien. En verderop in de vertrekhal zijn ook de andere klokken omhult. Vreemd, juist op deze plaats, een van de grote vliegvelden van Europa, waar de hoogmis van de exacte tijdsplanning wordt opgevoerd. De komst van de trein in de late 19de eeuw noopte tot het gelijkzetten van de klokken in het hele land. Fabrieken en kantoren brachten de tijd verder in het gelid. Voorheen werd die beleefd door wederkerende seizoenen en het ritme van dag en nacht. Het werd licht, het werd donker en daar tussenin, ergens halverwege, stond de zon op zijn hoogste punt. Stap voor stap werd het 'ongeveer' vervangen door 'exact' en dat was hard nodig ook, want er landt hier op Schiphol iedere minuut een vliegtuig. Stipt.

29 juli 2025. Volgens de woordvoerder werden de eerste klokken al in 2012 afgedekt. 'Vanwege oplopende onderhoudskosten.' De woordvoerder kan niet zeggen over wat voor bedragen dat gaat. Wel dat het heel complex is om de klokken lopend te houden. ... Als een van de 87 klokken stilstaat, kun je niet even de batterij vervangen. ...’De klokken repareren kost geld. Ze vervangen ook', zegt de woordvoerder. Afgedekte klokken op een luchthaven, waar mensen toch graag willen weten hoe laat het is, hebben geen nut. Schiphol heeft nu dan ook besloten het grootste deel van de klokken definitief weg te halen. 'Op plekken waar tijd cruciaal is, denk aan overstapzones of gates, komen ze terug. Op andere plekken gaan ze weg. Afgedekte klokken dragen niets bij aan de kwaliteit en reiservaring die we passagiers willen bieden.' nu.nl

VERLOREN TIJD. Het vliegtuig brengt je deze keer naar Milaan Malpensa. MXP in vliegtuigtaal. Om het even waar je naar toe vliegt, iedere reis is - op de luchthaven-code na - volkomen uitwisselbaar. Het welkoms- en veiligheidspraatje, de drankjes en het eten, de krant of een kort ongemakkelijk slaapje. De resolutie van de ervaring van de reis tussen Amsterdam en Milaan is te verwaarlozen klein. Je stapte op Schiphol uit de realiteit, om er zo meteen in Malpensa weer in terug te keren. De reis per vliegtuig verloopt in de regel vlot, je wint er tijd mee. Of is de tijd tussen opstijgen en landen juist totaal verloren, een knip uit je leven?

‘Welkom, blijf u vooral nog even zitten en houdt uw riem nog vast’, het taxi muziekje, dan zo snel als het maar door de slurf, de lange gangen door, even naar de wc, handen wassen, parfum wolk uit de duty free, bagage band, douane - je kunt het allemaal dromen, je kunt het met je ogen dicht doorlopen. De tijd onder een kopieerapparaat, van één maakt die ergens veel van, de verveling. Dan de trein naar Milano Centrale, en als je geluk hebt, en dat heb je, meteen aansluiting naar Genova en La Spezia.

GEDROOMDE TIJD. Je dommelt, het was ook vroeg opstaan vanochtend. Het laagland van Lombardije, de brug over de Po, je aandacht flakkert. De onverbiddelijke opeenvolging van gebeurtenissen vervloeit met de cadans en de gerichtheid van de trein. Wagon volgt wagon, zoals het ene moment op het vorige. De pijlvormige tijd die als een naald de gebeurtenissen als kralen aan elkaar rijgt. Zonder naald en draad zou alles zich tegelijkertijd voltrekken. Heden, verleden, toekomst, daar en hier - alles zou in een keer gebeuren, of je een emmer leeg gooit.

Wellicht droom je nu, zoals indertijd Zhuang Zhi. Over een vlinder, die zonder enige haast rondfladdert, onbekommerd, terwijl ze weet dat haar leven na een paar weken al voorbij is. Of is het juist die vlinder, die droomt. Dat ze jou is, knikkebollend in een Italiaanse trein? Je opent je ogen. Dat moeten de heuvels van Ligurië zijn.

VERSTROOIDE TIJD. Na Genova ben je weer wat helderder in je hoofd. De trein volgt de kust, mistig zacht licht, pastel kleurige villa's, druivenstokken op de flanken. En dan, onaangekondigd, een staccato afwisseling van licht en donker. Een tunnel gevolgd door uitzicht op een wonderschoon Italiaans vissersdorpje, gevolgd door weer een tunnel, en nog een ander dorpje, nog mooier dan de eerste. Ik weet niet of je het weet, dit is iconisch Italië, de Cinque Terra, bovenaan iedere zichzelf respecterende bullet list. Hier moet je geweest zijn om de rust en het authentieke leven te ervaren. Gedurende de halve minuut - het interval tussen twee tunnels in - heb je goed zicht op een volgende dorpje en op de massa's toeristen in de nauwe straatjes en om de kleine haven. Op de paden die de Cinque Terra dorpjes met elkaar verbinden staan met regelmaat files. Van reizigers, van vacationers, van zoekers naar leegte. Er zijn tijdssloten om van het ene naar het andere dorpje te kunnen wandelen, en alles wat je zo graag spontaan had willen doen, moet lang van te voren gereserveerd worden. De etymologie van 'vakantie' moet toch echt woden gezocht worden in de notie van leegte. Leegte van zorgen en leegte van tijdsdruk. Maar goed, met deze dilemma's heb jij nu niets van doen.

GELEENDE TIJD. In La Spezia heb je een uurtje. Het is nu al laat in de middag en de boemel naar Aulla laat nog op zich wachten. Buiten het station vind je een klein parkje, het mag geen naam hebben, maar het is een parkje. En wat je mooi van past komt, er staat een vrij bankje. Het doffe ritme van vliegveld, vliegtuig, station en trein zit nog in je leden, en hoe fijn is het dan om eenvoudig wat te zitten en om je heen kijken. Je kent hier niemand, niemand kent jou, je hebt geen verplichting, en de trein om mee verder te reizen is er nog niet. Was het lang geleden dat je niets om handen had en er niet nerveus van werd? Was het lang geleden dat je vrijuit kon waarnemen? Daar links van je komt een oude man aangelopen, aangeschuifeld. Een vriendelijke oude baas, grijs, licht gebogen. Voor even bevrijd van de dwangmatige onrust om te doen, kun je voorbij de beperking van het ene moment zien. Je ziet de oude man van vandaag en je ziet het jonge ventje die hij gisteren nog was. Waarom zou je de ondeugende streken en dromen en de ander de wijsheid ontzeggen? Je ziet jong in oud en oud in jong.

VERSTREKEN TIJD. In Aulla, een klein onopvallend stadje in het dal van de Magra, wordt je opgepikt. Een vitale, pezige man, zon gebruind, staat buiten het station op je te wachten, leunend tegen een jeep, die duidelijk veel heeft meegemaakt. Hij stelt zich aan je voor, nee, hij is geen Italiaan, maar eigenlijk ook toch wel. Oorspronkelijk uit Zwitserland, hij woont hier het grootste deel van zijn leven. Jullie gaan op weg en die weg verlaat het slaperige stadje, de heuvels in. Je chauffeur lijkt de route te kunnen dromen en bezuinigt niet op snelheid. Er zit niets anders op dan te vertrouwen op zijn stuurmanskunst.

Als je van opzij naar zijn handen, die losjes het stuur omvatten, kijkt, is het duidelijk dat deze werk hebben verzet. En als je ogen naar beneden dwalen, zie je dat hij auto rijdt zonder schoenen aan. Wanneer hij je zoekende ogen opmerkt, lacht hij. ‘Laatst werd ik aangehouden, routinecontrole, door de carabinieri. Dat hadden ze geloof ik nog niet meegemaakt, een chauffeur met blote voeten. Dat is niet toegestaan, signore, alstublieft, schoenen aan achter het stuur. Dat heb ik toen maar gedaan, maar je rijdt gewoon veel beter zonder, je hebt veel meer gevoel met de auto.’

Ondertussen rijden jullie door beboste heuvels, hier en daar een dorpje, groepje pratende mensen, een rivier, een brug, bomen, overal bomen. ‘Ja’, zegt hij, ‘vroeger, langer geleden was deze streek veel meer bewoond. Zoals op zoveel plekken op de wereld zijn de families naar de stad getrokken. In het dorp waar wij wonen, is het 's winters stil, dan wonen we er maar met weinig. Ja, in de zomer, dan komen ze, uit de stad, naar het familiehuis. Ferragosto, de vakantie. En zodra die afgelopen is weer terug naar de stad. Hun hart ligt hier, maar ja, hier is niets te verdienen.’

De jeep draait een bocht uit, het nauwe dal verbreedt zich en een weids uitzicht dient zich aan. In de verte verheffen steile hellingen zich uit de groene heuvels. De pieken kleuren zacht rood door het licht van de vroege avond. ‘Dat zijn de pieken van de Apuani, zegt hij, je kunt het van hieruit niet zien, maar aan de andere zijde, net onder de top, zijn de marmergroeven. Michelangelo haalde daar het witte marmer, voor zijn David, e meer. In een rechte lijn is het niet ver, Carrara, Massa, daar wordt goud geld verdient. Dat marmer gaat de wereld over. Dit hier is een andere wereld, de bergen zitten ertussen. Dit land heet de Lunigiana, het land van de maan. Het was altijd een vergeten stuk van het rijke Toscana, en dat is het eigenlijk nog steeds. Kijk daar, en hij wijst vooruit, naar een beboste helling, daar waren niet lang geleden terrassen, gerst en groente, fruitbomen. De Lunigiana liep de vorige eeuw leeg en de akkers en de dorpen ontvolkten.’

We rijden een tijd verder zonder te praten. De weg wordt smaller en nog bochtiger. De avondzon komt niet meer over de heuvels. Het groen wordt donkergroen. ‘Kijk’, zeg hij, een breed gebaar makend van links naar rechts. ‘Kastanjes, allemaal kastanjes. De hele streek is bedekt met kastanjebos, lang geleden aangeplant. Het was vroeger voor de mensen hier een belangrijke stuk van het leven. In het najaar werden de kastanjes verzameld, en gedroogd. Kastanjemeel, kastanjebrood, kastanje koekjes. Ja, het wordt nog steeds wel gedaan, maar niet op de schaal van toen. Wat had je toen? Wilde zwijnen, kastanjes en porcini. Veel van de kastanje percelen werden aan hun lot overgelaten, die verwilderden. Je zult het morgen wel zien.’

Het is gaan schemeren. De kronkelige weg en je lege maag vormen geen goede combinatie. Dan zegt je chauffeur, daar is het, dat is Casola. Je ziet een middeleeuws dorpje, als tegen een helling geplakt. En daar ligt Il Convento.

De jeep slaat rechtsaf een stoffig pad in, dat na korte tijd wordt doorkruist door een riviertje. De chauffeur twijfelt niet en stuurt de jeep het opspattende water door. Een scherpe draai en dan stijl omhoog en dan stoppen we voor het oude klooster. Hij schakelt de motor uit, we openen de portieren, stappen uit, de motor zoemt en tikt na. Het is stil.

VERDRAAIDE TIJD. Door de geschiedenis heen, in alle culturen namen bomen een speciale plek in en dat is vandaag de dag niet anders. Ja, ja, je bedoelt zeker in de vorm van timmerhout en kerstboomplantages? Ierland en Portugal waren bedekt met eikenbos, heel Europa was ooit een groot woud, en kijk nu eens. En maar petities ondertekenen om de wouden in de Amazone en op Borneo te redden, terwijl hier het continent al lang geleden van zijn bomen werd ontdaan. Natuurlijk, er zijn hier bossen, zolang de bomen maar mooi in rijen naast elkaar staan en snel recht timmerhout leveren.

Onze cultuur spiegelt zich aan de jeugd. Frisse wangen, strak lichaam, jeugdige aantrekkelijkheid. Al wat mogelijk wordt gedaan om rimpels te vermijden en het lichaam vooral zo onaangedaan mogelijk te conserveren. Stel je voor hoe het zou zijn: op alle billboards, in alle tv reclame, oude gerimpelde gezichten en lichamen om de producten aan te prijzen. Het zou zo maar kunnen, in een verre toekomst, de oude mens met zijn verweerde lichaam als na te streven ideaal.

Bij het beschouwen van bomen is dat de normale gang van zaken. Een oeroude linde, een zeldzaam oud exemplaar, een hekje er omheen, een plakkaat met daarop zijn wederwaardigheden. Dat is een bezienswaardigheid. In hoe we naar bomen kijken, is ouderdom, verwering, verwrongenheid de maat der dingen. Zeg nou zelf, je zou toch niet al de moeite doen, een lange omweg maken om een jeugdige spil te gaan bekijken, recht van leden, met een zachte gave huid, en doorschijnende blaadjes.

Hoe je zo oud wordt als die linde? In ieder geval niet door al te veel op te vallen, of te proberen nuttig te zijn.

Timmerman Shi ging naar Qi. Bij Quyu gekomen zag hij een eik als heilige boom van het altaar van de Aarde. Hij was zo groot dat duizenden runderen eronder konden schuilen. Zijn omvang was wel honderd el. Hij was zo hoog als een berg. Pas op tien vadem hoogte kwamen de eerste takken. Er waren meer dan tien zijtakken, die zo dik waren dat men er boten van kon maken.

Het stond er zo vol met kijkers dat het was alsof er markt gehouden werd. Maar de timmerman keek niet op of om, en vervolgde zijn weg zonder te stoppen. Toen de meestertimmerman thuis was gekomen, verscheen de heilige eikenboom aan hem in een droom, en sprak: ‘Waar dacht je mij wel mee te vergelijken? Wilde je zeggen dat ik ‘overtollig hout’ was? Appelen, peren, mandarijnen, pomelo’s en de vruchten van andere bomen: ze worden afgerukt zodra ze rijp zijn. Daardoor worden die bomen gekwetst, hun grote takken afgebroken en hun twijgjes vernield. Ze zijn het zelf die zich deze algemeen gangbare geweldplegingen op de hals halen, en met andere wezens is het ook zo gesteld. ‘Stil! Hou je mond! Dat is ook maar een soort toevlucht van hem, omdat anders zij die hem niet begrijpen kwaad van hem zouden spreken. Als hij geen aardgod was, zou hij misschien toch niet aan de bijl ontkomen! En laten we bedenken dat de manier waarop hij zichzelf beschermt anders is dan die algemeen gangbaar is. VERGETEN TIJD. In de stenen muur die het klooster omringd vind je de deur, verveloos en onopvallend. De twee jonge mensen staan je daar al op je te wachten. De deur opent met wat gekraak en gepiep en jullie staan op een smal bospad. Dat pad volgt de buitenzijde van het klooster en duikt dan het dichte gebladerte van het bos in. Wanneer je je na een tijdje lopen omdraait, zie je in de verte het verstilde dorp. De geluiden van de wereld - een motorzaag, geklop van een hamer, een roepend kind - vervagen en worden geabsorbeerd door de stilte.

Bij een splitsing van het pad - je zou er zo aan voorbij zijn gelopen - zegt de jonge man: rechtdoor gaat het verder naar het convent van Codiponte, we gaan hier naar rechts. Vlakbij de splitsing staat een enorme kastanje, met een holle basis , waaruit een groot aantal stammen zijn gegroeid. Je blijft staan, verbeeld je het? Minstens één maal tijdens iedere zomerschool, in de namiddag, zodra de warmte van de Italiaanse zomer wat tot bedaren was gekomen, verzamelden we bij de houten deur in de buitenmuur van het klooster. Piepend open, iedereen er doorheen, piepend weer dicht. Vrolijk keuvelend volgden we dan hetzelfde smalle pad waarop jij, met Shirin en Aaron, de twee jonge mensen, hebt gelopen. Ter hoogte van de splitsing en de wachter had het onbezorgde gepraat steevast zijn volume verloren en als we uiteindelijk het oudste stuk van het kastanjebos bereikten, was dat helemaal stil gevallen. Niet omdat dat zo afgesproken was - we werden waarschijnlijk opgenomen in de tijdschaal die bomen eigen is. Praten wordt dan moeizamer, eigenlijk overbodig. De chi kung beoefening in het oude kastanjebos bestond er voor sommigen uit eenvoudig te zitten, met de rug tegen een boom. Anderen gingen voor een moment op de zachte grond liggen en vielen in een diepe slaap. En er waren er natuurlijk ook bij die de chi kung in een meer herkenbare vorm beoefenden. Maar allen ervoeren een vanzelfsprekendheid, een moeiteloosheid. Alsof het regent en je geen moeite hoeft te doen om nat te worden. Aanwezig zijn is dan voldoende.

TIJDLOOS. De ouders van Shirin en Aaron, Martina Weber en Marcel Müller, die de Convento over de jaren heen in een onverstoorbaar ritme hadden herbouwd, zorgden jaar na jaar voor warme gastvrijheid. Zij boden de perfecte voorwaardes voor intense chi kung studie. De eerste maal dat ik hen bezocht waren hun kinderen klein. Nu zijn die volwassen en de initiators van een terugkerend zomerfestival in en rond Il Convento.
