Ma Yuan 馬遠 (c. 1160–1225) was a painter who lived during the Southern Song dynasty. His great-grandfather, grandfather, father, and son were all painters and held positions at court in that capacity. A characteristic feature of much of Ma Yuan's work is a 'one-corner’ composition, in which the most important elements of the painting are brought together in one of the corners. The other parts of the painting remain more or less empty.
