Wat zegt het etymologisch woordenboek over ’etymologie’?‘
studie van de herkomst der woorden’. lat. **etymologia* < gr. **etumología* ‘aanwijzing van de oorsprong van een woord’, gevormd uit **étumos* ‘waar’ en **lógos* ‘woord’.

****taal** \[systeem van spraakklanken\] {**tale, tael* \[hetgeen iem. zegt, gesprek, taal\] 1220-1240} oudsaksisch **tala* \[getal, spraak\], oudhoogduits **zala* \[getal\], oudfries **tale, tele* \[getal, taal\], oudengels **talu* \[verhaal\], oudnoors **tal, tala* \[getal, verhaal\] (vgl. **tellen*);

🇬🇧

What does the etymological dictionary say about ‘etymology’?
'facts of the origin and development of a word,' from Old French **etimologie*, **ethimologie*, from Latin **etymologia*, which was borrowed from Greek **etymologia* 'analysis of a word to find its true origin.' This is literally 'study of the true sense (of a word),' with **\-logia* 'study of, a speaking of' + **etymon* 'true sense, original meaning'. This is perhaps cognate with Sanskrit **satyah*, Gothic **sunjis*, Old English **soð* 'true. from a PIE **\*set-* "be stable."

****tale** (n) Middle English **tale*, from Old English **talu* 'piece of information, story, narrative, fable; statement or relation of events alleged to be true.' This is from Proto-Germanic **\*talō* (source also of Dutch **taal* "speech, language," Danish **tale* "speech, talk, discourse," German **Erzählung* "story," also compare Gothic **talzjan* "to teach").

**MOEGDREEK TARPEN**

De **geheime taal** van **IJmuiden**, ook wel **omgekeerd praten** of **moëgdreek taarpen**genoemd, is een dialect dat bestaat uit het omdraaien van lettergrepen. Deze taal ontstond rond **1900** onder concurrerende vletterlieden en roeiers die elkaar niet wilden verraden over de visvangst of loodsdiensten.

### MILLION

A big number - [RobWords.substack](https://robwords.substack.com/p/a-million-is-a-thousand?utm%5Fsource=post-email-title&publication%5Fid=4258508&post%5Fid=214906385&utm%5Fcampaign=email-post-title&isFreemail=true&r=3mbzbn&triedRedirect=true&utm%5Fmedium=email)

*Million* is descended from the Latin for “thousand”, *mille.* That’s the same Latin source as our word *mile* – originally a thousand Roman paces – and the *milli*\- in *millimetres*, *millilitres*, etc.

So how come a million is a thousand thousands, rather than just a thousand? The key is those final two letters: *\-on*..
