In het spreekwoord ‘Acht is meer dan duizend’ betekent acht eveneens ‘oplettend’. Dit spreekwoord betekent: ‘goed opletten is veel waard’, oftewel: ‘wie goed oplet, heeft daar veel voordeel van’. Acht is een heel oud woord, dat teruggaat op het Protogermaanse ahto. De grondbetekenis van acht was ‘werking van het denkvermogen’. Later kreeg het betekenissen als ‘gedachte’ en ‘aandacht’. In het Middelnederlands ontwikkelde zich daaruit onder meer de betekenis ‘oplettendheid, opmerkzaamheid’.

The imagery employed in The Book of Changes traces the interplay between eight natural phenomena. Just as a chessboard is eight squares wide and eight squares long, comprising sixty-four squares, so The Book of Changes comprises sixty-four chapters. Eight archetypes ~ sixty-four fundamental encounters ~ thousand possible changes.
